Going to the dentist can be an intimidating experience. Wondering what might be happening inside your mouth and what the dentist will do to your teeth and gums can often be a little off-putting, especially if you’re afraid of pain.

And that’s why Lifesmile Dentistry & Cosmetics specialises in Seaforth’s dental first-timers, providing a delicate and sensitive dental service that’s painless in every way.

Prior to the initial appointment kindly please fill out our 'New Acquaintance' form, which will have been given to you prior to your visit
Dr Peter Smyth will then take a full dental history, mainly based on your reason for attending. However it’s desired to have a full picture of your previous dental experience. Following this, you will be asked some basic questions about your dental health to ensure our advice and treatment for you is as safe as possible.

Common dental complaints:

Most people attend us for a general dental health check-up but some particular complaints may include:

  • Tooth pain of any duration: whether mild or severe
  • Noticing a hole or stain in your tooth
  • Bleeding or sore gums
  • Missing teeth
  • Concerns over the appearance of your teeth
  • Ulcers or anything else you may have noticed on the pink (soft) tissues
  • Jaw pain
  • Bad breath
  • Snoring

Your examination

We will then carry out your examination which involves:
  • Outside of the mouth
  • The 'pink tissues' of the mouth including screening for signs of oral cancer
  • The gums
  • The teeth: noting tooth number, quality, wear, decay, positioning, bite and appearance.
To complete the full examination, Dr Peter Smyth will most likely require to take at least two X-rays to fully examine the back teeth. Photographs may also be taken if required (with your permission) to assist our communication with you. The full findings will then be explained to you in an easy to understand way and any recommendations for treatment will be explained. In some situations, there may be many options for treatment.

We will inform you and involve you in decision making at all times to choose the best treatment for you- as it will vary between individuals. You should never ever feel pressured into treatment. No question is ever 'a silly question'- please ask away.

Your treatment

Dr Peter Smyth will then begin to advise you on ways to improve your oral health (if required) and give instruction on proper brushing techniques, flossing etc.

It is now time for a really good clean of your teeth. Then finally a polish to rejuvenate that luster look that all teeth should have.

Regardless of our findings- we will always recommend 6 monthly check-ups and professional tooth cleaning.

X-Rays will be recommended at intervals of between 6 months – 3 years.
